Warlords Tournament
History
In 1994, the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation (SASF) held its first basketball tournament fundraiser. SASF took this opportunity to introduce itself, and its purpose, to the community.
From the Inaugural “SASF New Year Classic” Basketball Tournament Program (1994):
The Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation was formed by the Chinese Community Church Basketball Program and the Warlord Basketball Program. It is a joint effort to provide a quality, organized and structured basketball program for Asian American youths…
The long term goal of the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation is to build a community sports gym for Asian youths. It is a community need and interest as evidenced by the numerous basketball teams sponsored by various churches, organizations and private individuals…
The Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation recognizes the pursuit of a community sport gym will be a long and arduous campaign… The Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation is taking the first step and invites all those who believe in the same goal to join the quest for a community gym.
This invitation for others to join “The Quest” was well received. Over the years, SASF has grown with the support of numerous Sacramento-area basketball groups and community organizations.
Greater involvement from other groups also allowed the Sacramento Warlords to take a step back from SASF and focus more on fundraising efforts for its own basketball program. In 2001, the Sacramento Warlords hosted a basketball tournament in its own name, in addition to helping at the SASF New Year Classic. Today, both tournaments continue to benefit the Sacramento Asian American community and enjoy the competition of teams throughout California.
